Stumped by training terms? Worried by workplace jargon? Baffled by business baloney? Have no fear - the CIPD are here!
Learning about Learning: An A-Z of Learning by Samuel Malone
A new publication from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development helps cuts through the jargon of learning with a handy a-z of training, development tools and learning techniques.
The book aims to help managers outside the human resources (HR) arena to better understand the complexities of the world of learning - one of the key factors of people management and development.
Learning about Learning: An A-Z of Learning has been written by Samuel Malone and is published by the CIPD. Basically the book is a dictionary of the terms and phrases used by HR professionals to describe the theories, models and concepts around the learning process.
The book is aimed at every employee or manager who has ever wanted to understand how to train and develop themselves or others, but has been put off by the spaghetti of ever widening jargon surrounding the subject. The book does this by providing clear, concise, definitive explanations of everything to do with learning, from ‘Ability’ to the ‘Zeigarnik effect’.
Intricate
Author Samuel Malone has many years of experience as both a training consultant and a lecturer. He has written numerous books on skills development and training. He comments: "Learning, like any aspect of modern business such as IT or marketing, has a mass of intricate and complicated jargon behind it. The problem can be that those who most need to understand how training and development work, such as middle managers outside the HR department, could end up so confused by the terminology that they either get it wrong or give up on the whole thing.
"Phrases such as ‘Neuro-Linguistic Programming’ and ‘Criterion-Referenced Instruction’ might leave some people scratching their heads. However, this book acts both as a jargon-buster and a source of new ideas. Employees and managers alike can use it to find new ways to learn and develop."
The book addresses and defines diverse topics of that will be of interest to managers who come into contact with the world of training, at whatever level. These include: learning, personal development, training, educational psychology, memory and study skills.
Learning about Learning: An A-Z of Learning by Samuel Malone is available now from the CIPD.
