Manchester Police Constable Stuart Pizzey - recently honoured in the Queen's Birthday Honours List - has received his MBE for 'services to policing and the community' at Buckingham Palace.

Stuart, 41 years old, joined Greater Manchester Police (GMP) in 1980. He was stationed at Bootle Street police station in Manchester city centre and has been based at this station for all of his police service to date. He has worked in virtually every department and his present role is Crime Reduction Advisor. This has involved Stuart designing and producing approximately 2 million crime prevention leaflets and has arranged over £1,000,000 worth of sponsorship.

Instrumental in setting up many initiatives designed to help reduce crime in the city centre and improve the quality of life for residents, workers and visitors, Stuart has been involved in the Manchester City Centre CCTV system, Storenet and Nite Net radio systems, along with the Pager Alert scheme.

Commendations

He has received 10 commendations for bravery and good conduct including a ‘Royal Humane Society Award for Bravery’ in 1981 and a ‘Chief Constable's Commendation’ for his part in the evacuation of Manchester city centre during the 1996 terrorist bombing. He was also nominated as GMP's ‘Community Police Officer of the Year’ in 2000.

Commenting on the award he said: "When I first received the letter from Downing Street, I must confess that I thought it was a joke but, when I realised it was true, I was extremely pleased and honoured. The fact that the award is for 'service to policing and the community' in Manchester makes me proud of the efforts and initiatives that I have been involved in over the years. It is also in recognition of the support offered by my colleagues and family. There are many other ideas and initiatives that I have planned for the city centre but this award makes all the previous effort that much more worthwhile."

Stuart is married and has two sons, Philip who is 12 years old and Andrew who is 11 years old. He lives in Worsley, Manchester.
