Set in Pacific paradise, the island of Fiji is breathtaking. The sun, sea and sand are the dominant features, but they do not detract from the intriguing culture and the varied and interesting terrain. Fiji itself is split into two islands, but most of the places to stay are on the larger island, Viti Levu.
Mamanuca Islands
Easily accessible from Nadi are the small Mamanuca group of islands. Home to the backpacker and big-spender alike, the islands are great for water sports due to the fantastic reefs and colourful fish.
Not much remains in the way of forest on the group, but Monu and Monuriki do have some and thus are home to a variety of birds and reptiles.
Nadi
Nadi is on the west coast of the island. It is set against rolling mountains, but is not as attractive as at first may be hoped. Everything here is geared to tourism, and thus is a good starting place to organise your travels, or as a cheap stop-over.
The market area and the traditional Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple are some of the more cultural sights to be found.
For shopping, souvenirs and duty-free, as well as activities such as diving and horse riding Nadi is ideal.
Navala
One of the most picturesque places in Fiji is Navala. Navala is situated in the Nausori highlands on the island of Viti Levu. This and other villages in the area get few visitors, so it pays to be polite and seek the consultation of the village chief about matters such as taking photographs and wandering around. Avoid the traditional day of worship, Sunday, as this is a time to be spent with the family.
Accommodation is available but basic, and remember to be polite at all times.
Sigatoka
Sigatoka is a small farming town that is also service town for the Coral Resorts. The most striking sight to behold is the strange mansion on the hill behind the town.
For the explorer, Sigatoka valley contains around 200 cultural sites of interest, and if that is not enough then the Sigatoka sand dunes nearby are worth a visit.
Suva
Suva is positioned on the south-east of the island. It is a large port, and it is home to the majority of Fiji’s urban population. It is without doubt one of the most sophisticated cities in the South Pacific.
As a cultural centre it is home to the University of the South Pacific and the Fiji Museum, both providing fascinating insights into life past and present in this delightful part of the world. To take in the real ambiance a trip the Suva municipal market is essential due to the delights such as tropical fruits and vegetables, fish and spices.
From London to Nadi is 27 hours 45 minutes.
Average summer (July to September) temperature: 24-26°C.
