Architecture and buildings are just some of the enjoyable aspects of the city for visitors to the Welsh capital.
96% of Cardiff's visitors said their stay had been enjoyable and more than half of those interviewed said there were no aspects of their visit they didn't like, says a study by Cardiff County Council.
Perceptions of Cardiff were also very positive, with 88% agreeing that the city is very welcoming and 86% saying it's a vibrant and lively city.
Nearly 1,300 visitors were interviewed between June and August 2001 for the Cardiff Visitor Survey and 19% of those questioned said the city's architecture was the most enjoyable aspect of their visit, closely followed by arts and culture, and people and atmosphere.
Just over 40% had come because of a previous visit or a personal recommendation, suggesting that having an enjoyable visit is an important factor in encouraging people to return.
Overseas Visitors
The survey also revealed that nearly a third of visitors are from England and a further 29% come from overseas - including more than half of the visitors to Cardiff Castle. The average daily spend is £37 (for day visitors) and (£89 for staying visitors), an indication of the significant contribution by visitors to the city's economy.
Among the attractions visited were Cardiff Bay (visited by 46% of those questioned) and Cardiff Castle (44%) but the city's shops (39%) and National Museum and Gallery (33%) were also popular.
Deputy Mayor, Councillor Marion Drake, said the survey provided valuable information on who visits the city and why: "Knowing our visitors, and what they think of Cardiff, enables us to respond to their needs and help them make the most of their visit," she said. "It also allows us to target our marketing and development more effectively in order to encourage more people to come and find out what Cardiff has to offer. It's also good to know that the city's arts and culture are highly valued."
