Monty Python's Spamalot at the Palace Theatre, London
Former Doctor Who/All Creatures' Great & Small star Peter Davision is following in the plate steel footsteps of Grahame Chapman, Tim Curry and Simon Russell Beale, starring as King Arthur on a comic quest for the Holy Grail.
Former Python - and principle songwriter in the group - Eric Idle officially launched the British production of the smash hit Broadway musical at London's Palace Theatre. with Composer John Du Prez, Choreographer Casey Nicholaw, multi Olivier Award-winning Set and Costume Designer Tim Hatley, as well as members of the newly engaged London cast of the Tony Award winning musical.
Lovingly Ripped-Off
Directed by Mike Nichols, Spamalot has a book by Eric Idle, "lovingly ripped-off" from the screenplay of the Pythons’ best-loved film: Monty Python and the Holy Grail by Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin.
Telling the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and their quest for the Holy Grail, Monty Python’s Spamalot features a chorus line of dancing divas (and serfs), flatulent Frenchmen, killer rabbits and a legless (and armless) knight. Or that should that be ''kiinigiit!'?
Winning more 'Best Musical' awards than any other show during its run in New York last year - including the Drama Desk and Outer Critics’ Circle Awards for 'Best Musical' along with the Tony, Spamalot has broken house records, playing to standing-room only audiences since opening to critical acclaim in March, 2005 at the flagship Shubert Theatre on Broadway. In addition, Mike Nichols won his eighth Tony Award for direction of the musical.
Comments on Spamalot so far:
"I'm not a Monty Python fan, but I didn't have to be. This silly, funny show had me laughing from the moment the curtain went up to the moment the curtain went down." - Joan Hamburg, WOR Radio.
"An exhilarating, no-holds-barred smash-hit" - John Lahr, The New Yorker.
"Raises silliness to an art form." - The Sunday Times.
"Thomas Wolfe suggested that it's impossible to go home again. Surrounded by the brilliance of our creative team led by Mike Nichols, Eric Idle, John Du Prez and more Brits than we can ever count, we're thrilled at last to hop the pond and indeed, Come Home Again. It's a warm, cosy, exciting Monty Python feeling all around." - Bill Haber, Producer EOS Airlines.
