New technology should be used to promote the use of the Welsh language, says e-minister Andrew Davies.
Welsh Assembly e-minister Andrew Davies believes that Wales and the Welsh Assembly should use new technology, to bring Wales closer to being bilingual.
Andrew Davies has unveiled the Assembly's Information Age Strategic Framework for Wales, which includes targets to increase the use and development of the Welsh language in the fast-growing world of new technology. The strategy recommends that the Welsh language should be integrated into all Information Communication Technology (ICT) policies and activities in Wales.
"The Welsh language may be one of Europe's oldest languages, but it is a language of today, and in order for it to grow and develop, it is essential that it is part of this communication revolution, " says Davies.
Another priority of the strategy will be to encourage Welsh speakers to gain ICT skills, and linked to this is the need to ensure that bilingual educational and training materials are readily available.
The Welsh Assembly e-minister says he also recognises the need to raise the profile of Wales, Welsh culture and the Welsh language on the world wide web. One way of achieving this is by making sure that the wealth of cultural and linguistic information about Wales is available on electronic format.
