All rise for London's White Rosers as spiky pop sensibility fuses with New Wave-isms galore on this latest release.
Love Is A Number by White Rose Movement
If you have already heard Love Is A Number, the debut single from London's White Rose Movement, then this introduction is unnecessary. The attitude, the groove, the hooks, and the spiky pop sensibility, it's all here - right down to the Blondie influenced promo. video.
White Rose Movement are: Finn Vine (on vocals and guitar) Jasper Milton (another guitar) Owen Dyke (bass thing) Taxxi (on keyboards) and last – but by no means least - Ed Harper (on drums).
They formed in the winter of 2002, blinking out into the first politically charged year of the decade, taking their name from the noble – some say naďve (and ultimately doomed) 1930's German anti-fascist youth movement. Inspired by a collective love affair with '80s pioneers such as The Sound, Depeche Mode and DAF, and driven by a desire to create pop music with a real depth and passion, they began to lay down the foundations of the White Rose Movement sound.
It’s A New Wave
In between sessions in dingy rehearsal studios, WRM found time to throw the odd party or two. Their secret session, The Dazzle!, in an out of the way corner of London's East End, has been the scene of much creative debauchery over the last 12 months, with the likes of M.I.A. performing, Chris Cunningham DJ-ing and WRM rising to the role of house band. A surreal and brazen playground for London's brave young lions, The Dazzle! relishes the faded and dubious glamour of a venue that it is rumoured to have inspired Morrissey's National Front Disco, and that retains many of the fittings from a previous incarnation as an S&M club.
After signing to Independiente in 2004, following a series of incendiary live shows, recording began in earnest. A hook up with producer du jour Paul Epworth proved instantly productive, and within days WRM had completed their debut single Love Is A Number. A few white labels were pressed, and the buzz on White Rose Movement spread like a vicious rumour. Erol Alkan championed the single at 'Trash' and booked the band for a gig. Radio 1’s Zane Lowe and Xfm’s Lauren Laverne are also fans.
Love Is A Number is out now, from Independiente.
