The Other Side of the Bed
“The most fun foreign film since Y Tu Mama Tambien” - Empire
Universal Pictures Video presents The Other Side of the Bed, a wild new comedy which tells the story of two couples whose switching back and forth between partners leads to lies and inevitable heartache.
Sonia (played by Paz Vega) and Javier (Ernesto Alterio) appear as the perfect couple, seemingly blissfully happy – and as pleased with life as could be. They are busy planning to get a house together, while their friends Paula (played by Natalia Verbeke) and Pedro (Guillermo Toledo) have a somewhat more turbulent relationship.
Heartbreak
“A seductive and stylish sex comedy.” – Sunday Express
Pedro is the first to face heartbreak when Paula ends their relationship having fallen in love with someone else. Pedro turns to his best friends Javier and Sonia for support. However, unbeknownst to him his best friend Javier is that other man. Whilst Paula urges Javier to end his relationship with Sonia, Sonia - in an effort to regain Pedro’s confidence in women - ends up seducing him. As they switch lovers back and forth, and the tension escalates and the tangled web of lies are messily revealed.
Recipient of the ‘Gala Presentation’ at the 2002 Toronto International Film Festival and a Goya Award Nominee for ‘Best Film’, Peter Dean, columnist with the British Video Association (BVA) has this to say about The Other Side of the Bed - a film he wholeheartedly recommends.
He says: “(The Other Side of the Bed)...is an engaging song and dance musical about two couples who get off with each other's partners. Javier deeply loves the beautiful Sylvia and they have an uninhibited sex life. Paula dumps her adoring boyfriend, Pedro for another man but she won't tell him who the guy is. He's Javier and she hounds him to tell Sylvia their relationship is over...Pedro sobs on Sylvia's shoulder – he's obsessed with Paula and has even hired a truly wacko P.I. (a man who has written a book claiming JFK killed himself) to tail Paula. Guess where unloading his grief on sympathetic Sylvia leads..."
Shakespeare
Peter Dean continues: “Although this is all very light-hearted feel good adult stuff in the style of many a light Shakespeare comedy, there is sex a-plenty. But don’t let that put you off! The film is also a musical in the line of Woody Allen’s Everyone Says I love You, although there isn’t a neurosis in sight! Highly recommended.”
Based on a screenplay by David Serrano, director Emilio Martinez-Lazaro delivers a stylish and sexy story of love and lies which has become the 3rd biggest film in Spain ever. The Other Side of the Bed was nominated for six Goya Awards - including ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Director’ - and received awards for ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Director’ and ‘Audience Favourite’ at the Festival de Malaga Cine Esponal.
