Breakthrough With Hydrogen Car

A hydrogen-powered car that can travel 250 miles on a single tank of 'gas?'

Car manufacturer Hyundai has scored a world first with its hydrogen powered Santa Fe that can travel 250 miles on a single tank, rivalling many petrol-engined cars.

The breakthrough means one of the major stumbling blocks to a real alternative to petrol has been removed and puts Hyundai close to a truly 'green' production car.

Previous attempts to use hydrogen-power have been hampered by the vehicles having a very small range before needing a re-charge.

The car has been produced in co-operation with Quantum Technologies Worldwide, which worked with Los Angeles-based Hyundai America Technical Centre to develop the system.

The extra range has been achieved by new technology allowing the hydrogen in the tank to be stored at a much higher pressure - up to 5000 pounds per square inch. Previously it could only be stored at 3600psi.

By storing the hydrogen safely at a higher pressure, there is no need for a larger tank - so passenger and luggage space is not eaten up. The tank even allows the Santa Fe to maintain a ground clearance at over eight inches, essential for a vehicle that can be used off-road.
