On The Buses

Last updated: 24/10/2006 - 11:42

Strathclyde Police has joined forces with Glasgow’s largest bus operator, First, to allow uniformed and non-uniformed officers free travel in and around the city.

In this new ‘occasional’ police vehicle, officers will be mingling with the public and raising the visibility of the Force, while helping to combat bus-related crime and vandalism.

Police Presence

Having a police presence on buses helps to give confidence to drivers and passengers, as police officers will be able to respond immediately to any incidents occurring on board. In effect, making bus travel more safe and attractive to passengers.

In addition, the initiative will allow community and beat patrol officers to travel more speedily through their designated areas, therefore helping them to respond more effectively to any incidents that may occur.

This is the latest in a number of joint initiatives between Strathclyde Police and First buses. The Force is currently working closely with the bus company to trial the use of CCTV cameras to detect the identity of vandals who endanger lives and damage public transport property.

Forward Thinking

Assistant Chief Constable (Community Safety) John McLean said: "I am pleased that Strathclyde Police are working jointly with First on this forward thinking initiative to make members of the community feel safer while traveling within the city."

Strathclyde Police is Scotland’s largest Force and one of the four biggest in the UK.
