Long Trip - Stay Safe
Last updated: 07/09/2006 - 09:39
When setting out on any journey it is essential to prepare. The first thing to consider is if the car you drive can reach its goal.
Take into account the general service level, including the amount of times it has been examined by a qualified mechanic. Don't think that just by checking the oil and filling the tank with petrol you're guaranteed a problem free journey. Problems, no matter how small, are more likely to develop on long trips.
Before Starting Out
Make sure the battery is in good working order. Get any previous problems of starting the engine examined. If you find the battery has been draining regularly, be on the safe side and replace it. Additionally, check the oil is at the maximum level.
Always check tyres before any journey to make sure they are in a good condition and have no uneven wear. Examine the lights to ensure they are working correctly; check both full and normal beam as these will prove invaluable in bad driving conditions. Make sure all brake and hazard lights are working correctly.
Check the windscreen washer reservoir is full. Use a combination of water and anti-freeze solution -this helps in cold conditions but also acts as a detergent to clean the windscreen. If wipers are worn, replace them, to ensure clear vision.
Equipment
Check all the necessary tools are in the boot; including jack, foot-pump, spanners and screwdrivers. Make sure the spare tyre is in good working condition and fully inflated.
Carry any items that could be useful if you hit problems - torch, umbrella, rope and spare fuses. Once you are satisfied the car is OK then you're ready to plan the route.
Planning the Route
Planning a route doesn't have to be a chore. Road atlases are vital, but they often don't go into great detail with the destination area. If you will feel more comfortable knowing the particular streets of your target area, buy an A-Z road map. Mark out landmarks along the route.
Before any journey, planning is the key. The more preparation put into your journey will lead to the better chance of a pleasant trip. Remember, use common sense at all times, and have a good trip.
