Loft Lifestyle V. Suburb Space

Are 'urban lifestyles' failing to attract workers back to town and city centres?

So-called 'urban lifestyles' could be failing to attract workers back to UK town and city centres.

Government attempts to lure people back to live in city centres are failing, according to new research.

It shows the majority of those moving house still like to live the quiet life in the suburbs, preferring private gardens and parking to shared space and the loft lifestyle.

But many people interviewed would consider living in the centre of towns if local services were more reliable, the research by Cardiff University found.

Dr Martyn Senior, who carried out the project, said: "Our research is disappointing news for government ministers and planners who have vigorously promoted a return to higher densities and land use mix."

Perhaps suprisingly - given the sheer volume of new apartments going up in city centres such as Manchester Dr Senior adds: "When faced with the choice of dockland-style town-house homes and apartments, many display the traditional preference for semi-detached and detached houses."
