Winners of the Navy’s annual Peregrine Trophy photography competition announced.

The winners of the Royal Navy’s annual Peregrine Trophy photography competition have been announced - aboard HMS Ark Royal, moored in Greenwich.

The competition dates back to 1963 when it was started at the now non-existent Royal Naval Air Station Peregrine, in Sussex, from which the award takes its name. Inaugurated to encourage the production of eye-catching images for naval public relations use, the Peregrine Trophy competition consists of 13 professional classes, each of which focuses upon particular techniques or subject areas. These include ‘Sports’, ‘Digital’, 'Personnel At Work' and ‘Fleet Air Arm’ categories, among others.

In the early 1990’s the amateur competition was added in order to tap into the seam of excellent amateur talent in the ranks. The distinguished panel of judges who ultimately determined the winners in the competition, comprised of: Paul Delmar Lecturer in Photography at Sheffield College, Catherine Benson, Picture Editor of Reuters and Eric Jenkins, from the British Institute of Professional Photographers.

In presenting the prizes the Second Sea Lord, Vice Admiral J M Burnell-Nugent CBE ADC said “I would like to start by congratulating not only the winners, but everyone who has contributed to yet another first-rate selection of photographs. Every aspect of the Royal Navy – from ships and aircraft to Royal Marines – has been captured, demonstrating yet again the unique combination of land, air and sea capabilities which the Royal Navy provides”.
