Boosting Africa HIV Cause

Last updated: 11/10/2006 - 11:16

A unique AIDS/HIV awareness raising festival hosted by Nelson Mandela. “The condition is medical, the solution is political" says Bob Geldof.

46664

A unique African AIDS/HIV awareness raising concert - captured on 3CDs and a DVD - featuring a cast of stars and hosted by former South African premiere Nelson Mandela.

"When I was President I worked hard to bring the epidemic under control – but there’s still so much for us all to do." - former US President Bill Clinton.

"Mr Mandela’s message is a fairly simple one and that is that all of us must care about the threat from HIV and AIDS." - John Samuel, Chief Executive, Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Hosted in South Africa’s Cape Town by Nelson Mandela in November last year the star-studded gala of music and awareness raising that is 46664 saw thirty of the world’s biggest and most respected artists perform to a staggering global audience of over 2 billion. Now the complete event is being released across three CD albums – respectively: African Prayer, Long Walk To Freedom and Amandla, as well as a live DVD, simply called 46664.

Inspired by the vision and leadership of Nelson Mandela himself, the 46664 campaign - named after Mandela’s prison number, worn during the long years of his incarceration by the former South African apartheid supporting regime - was born to raise awareness of the global HIV/Aids pandemic.

"Now we know there is something we can do – what will you do?" - Oprah Winfrey.

"AIDS is no mere disease. It is the greatest disaster in recorded human history." - Prof Richard Feacham, Executive Director, The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis & Malaria.

The concert was designed to raise funds as well as conciseness, with proceeds going to the Nelson Mandela Foundation, to help educate and assist with the problem in South Africa. The aim was for this initiative to be the biggest call to action for the fight against HIV and AIDS in history.

Unique Collaborations

The recordings feature a range of unique and exclusive artist collaborations as well as songs written especially for the shows.

The full list of artists who perform across the three CDs and DVD reads like a Who’s Who of popular music, cutting across styles and genres. The contributors include: Abdel Wright, Anastacia, Angelique Kidjo, Annie Lennox, Baaba Maal, Bob Geldof, Bongo Maffin, U2’s Bono and The Edge, Danny K, David Stewart, Jimmy Cliff, Johnny Clegg, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Ms Dynamite, Paul Oakenfold, Peter Gabriel, the surviving members of Queen, The Corrs, Watershed, Youssou n’Dour, Yusuf Islam, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Beyoncé Knowles from Destiny's Child and Zucchero, amongst others.

"The number one weapon of mass destruction in the world today...HIV/AIDS...Let’s save lives, build families, keep hope alive." - The Rev. Jesse Jackson.

"The poorest of continents is being left to deal with this epidemic largely on its own. This should not be." - Robert De Niro.

Highlights include the man behind Live Aid, former Boomtown Rat Bob Geldof, performing his own version of Elvis Costello’s apt call for common sense (What So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding. He then goes onto best this with the even more apposite track The Great Song Of Indifference, from his first ‘Vegetarians of Love’ album and a great version of Bob Marley's Redemption Song.

Eurythmic Dave Stewart, who inspired the 46664 project and appears hear with his musical opposite Annie Lennox, playing alongside Youssou n’Dour, among others, said: "I am delighted that this groundbreaking music launch which has brought together the artist community worldwide will result in our delivering the entirety of 46664 event on both CD and DVD to audiences globally."

The performers are all vocal on the issues of AIDS/HIV. Here's what some of them have to say:

Andrea Corr - “Mandela giving himself to people through his belief in humankind is absolutely inspirational.”

Andrews Bonsu - “Give one minute of your life to help stop AIDS.”

Angelique Kidjo - “Nothing is more important than the human life, particularly when we’re talking about the youth, the future of the planet.”

Annie Lennox - “We will never really eliminate AIDS until the issue of poverty has been addressed.”

Baaba Maal - “We’re here to say something, not to play to just let people dance.”

Beyoncé Knowles - “Being here is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life.”

Bono - "History will judge us on how we respond to the AIDS emergency...Whether we stood around with watering cans and watched as a whole continent burst into flames...Or not."

Brian May - “It’s something attacking humanity and we have to fight together.”

Caroline Corr - "This is very refreshing for us because it's about being able to do what we enjoy doing, but give something back as well."

Nelson Mandela introduced the show by saying, “It is our great honour to introduce you to a gathering of very special people; special because they are amongst the most talented artists and performers in the world, locally and internationally; but special also because their fame and fortune have not removed them from caring and compassion."
