TV Gardeners Make Us Go Green

Last updated: 19/10/2006 - 10:30

It's time to turn to the garden and follow in the footsteps of TV gardeners like Alan Titchmarsh and Charlie Dimmock.

Despite our best efforts to transform our gardens, the extent of our creativity will, for most, be limited to tidying the borders, adding a new plant here or there and cutting the lawn.

Of course, we would love for our gardens to be transformed, to provide the perfect backdrop for a relaxing evening - enjoying a glass of wine and entertaining friends, but it requires a great deal of courage and money to attempt to lay decking or a 10ft long water feature.

Garden Makeovers

Despite the makeover programme's attempts to make it look simple, they always have an army of highly skilled professionals on their side - but do not let that dampen your enthusiasm, as a simple patio can create just as much of a focal point and it is possible to do-it yourself.

Patio expert, Melinda Nicholds says: "Stylish patios really enhance the appearance of a garden and can also be a key feature, when house buyers are looking for the perfect property. Invest now, and not only will you be able to enjoy the garden - if you decide to sell - a well groomed garden is considered highly desirable adding value to your home.”

Here are some top starter tips for those thinking about having a patio:

  • Before you start, choose an area suitable for the patio - somewhere with a great view, or that catches the evening sun or shade depending on your preference

  • Decide on the shape and style of the patio

  • Mixing textures and colours can make your patio pretty

  • Once you have decided upon the colour and size of the paver, attractive patterns can be created by laying the pavers in bold configurations, such as the herringbone effect, often used in smaller cottage gardens

  • Contrasting Colours

Contrasting colours can also add character and by simply using a different paver for the border, steps and paths can become a focal point.

It is important that you take your time planning the patio, and local builders merchants are an excellent source of advice and information. When your garden is complete, all that remains is for you to stoke up the barbecue and enjoy!
