Buffy Goes Out To Slay
Last updated: 09/10/2006 - 16:58
The ancient evil of the Old Ones returns to wreak havoc in this game based on the hit TV show starring Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Into each generation a slayer is born. One girl, in all the world, she is The Chosen One, The Slayer! Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a third-person action/adventure game based on the international hit television series of the same name.
Players take on the role of Buffy Summers, your typical student by day - but a fierce destroyer of the undead by night. The game combines fighting, action, drama, humour, exploration and puzzle solving in a complex interactive 3D environment.
On television, The Slayer is possessed of the strength, skill and power to hunt down the eldritch forces of darkness that threaten the destruction of the world. The background to Joss Whedon’s genre straddling hit TV show is rich in monsters, enemies and inventive plots, making it near-perfect territory for games development.
Become Buffy Summers and Save the World!
The game starts with Buffy and her friends looking forward to some relaxation as their classes get postponed during UC Sunnydale’s annual Multicultural Week celebration. Unfortunately for the gang, demons are descending upon the not-so-sleepy town of Sunnydale too. And guess what? Only one thing stands in the way of their dark plan...The Slayer (or rather 'The Player')!
Aeons ago, powerful demons walked the earth. Over the ages, these ancient demons eventually lost their foothold in the world of men – and with it their hopes of controlling human society these “Old Ones” failed to keep up with the changing times in the world above and were forced to retreat to the dark, hidden places in the bowels of the Earth, while mortal man ruled over the world.
Return of The Old Ones
Now, back for revenge, the Old Ones are trying to take back the planet by creating a magical bridge over which an army of demons can be led into the world of man. For this terrible plan to succeed, the Old Ones require the dark powers of 'The Master', a malevolent 600-year old vampire – who will be familiar to viewers of the Buffy television show as her early season’s nemesis - with expertise in opening dimensional portals.
All this spells disaster for the world – if not for our heroine Buffy Summers, a 17-year-old high school student who must balance adolescent growing pains with the responsibility of being the Chosen One – and do battle with these demonic creatures that threaten the world's existence.
Key Features
The game features the voices of a number of favourite characters from the TV series, including vampire detective Angel, Xander Harris, Buffy’s best friend computer nerd turned sorceress Willow, Cordelia, Spike, the Master and Buffy’s British mentor, her Watcher, Rupert Giles.
Players fight a range of enemies including Spike, The Master, vampish vamp extraordinaire Drusilla and assorted demons, zombies and other hellish supernatural creatures.
All of Buffy's favourite haunts are richly detailed throughout the game playing area. These include: Sunnydale High School, the cemetery, The Bronze nightclub and the Giles’ library, which - as fans will know – also happens to sit on top of the town’s very own Hellmouth!
Special supernatural effects featured include: morphing creatures, eldritch explosions, dynamic fogging and arcane spell casting, all designed to enhance the dark, mythical setting of the game.
Intelligent Combat System
All of Buffy’s best vampire-fighting acrobatic moves from the TV show are available in the game. What’s more, an 'intelligent' combat system allows Buffy’s enemies to perform counter attacks and learn from character's fighting techniques as the game play proceeds.
The character of Buffy herself has special abilities and powers – to reflect the superhuman Slayer Powers displayed on TV. These powers can be used to damage or destroy the enemy, depending on her current level of experience and power. The various skills at the player’s disposal all require mastery in order to win. They include: Martial Arts, Gymnastics, Super Jump, Speed and Strength, Quick Healing and Spiderman-like Slayer Sense.
The games battleground is made up of 13 levels consisting of locations straight from the Buffy TV series - the Sunnydale Mall, Buffy’s dormitory room, the cemetery and many more – all sewn together in an engaging storyline which recreates the feel of the TV episodes.
It's up to Buffy to save the world from not just the Old Ones themselves, but the vampires and demons that may try and stop her frustrating their dark master’s plans. Have you got what it takes to save the world while maintaining unnaturally perfect hair? Dare you stand shoulder to shoulder with Buffy and pals against the Dark Gods? Well now’s your chance to go out to slay!
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is available now for PC, PS2 and Xbox from Electronic Arts and Fox Interactive.
