Born To Breed
Last updated: 11/10/2006 - 09:46
The Breeders are back with their third album, Title TK, the not - so - swift follow up to 1993’s Last Splash.
Title TK by The Breeders
Almost ten years since the release of Last Splash, the new Breeders album – Title TK -whose title is music industry shorthand for an album without a title, as in 'title to come' – could just be their best yet.
Led by founder member and former Pixies/Amps bass player Kim Deal, the album is the result of a series of collaborations with Shellac front man, producer Steve Albini.
Title TK features the band's recent singles Off You and Huffer, alongside a reworking of The Amps live favourite Full On Idle as well as 9 other brand new Breeders' songs. Three tracks on the album: Forced to Drive, Too Alive, and The She feature Kim Deal playing all the instruments. Her twin sister Kelley - formerly of the modestly named Kelley Deal 6000, as well as a previous Breeders line-up – joins ex-members of the band Fear and Kim on the rest of the tracks.
Unique
Most famous as the producer of Nirvana's In Utero album, Steve Albini has a pedigree that is hard to beat, having already worked with the Wedding Present and P.J Harvey, amongst many others. He spoke about working with the band, at Electrical Audio studios in Chicago. "The Breeders make a unique music that invites the listener to recognise that every moment of life is capable of containing at the same time the beauty of sunrise, the tragedy of deceit, the comedy of a pratfall and the mania of a drag race." He said.
A successful British tour saw the band performing crowd-pleasing sets peppered with new tunes as well as old favourites, such as the show-stopping Cannonball. During the tour the band also featured their own trashed version of Nerf Herder’s theme from hit TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Sadly this cover version has yet to be recorded by the band!
New Line-up
The band, which has previously boasted members including Josephine Wiggs and Tanya Donnelly (ex of Throwing Muses and Belly – now a 4AD solo recording artist in her own right) has another new line-up. The full band this time out is: Richard Presley (Electric Guitar), Mando Lopez (Electric Bass and Upright Bass), Jose Medeles (Drums), Kelley Deal (Electric Guitar, Bass Pedal and Vocals) and Kim Deal (Drums, Vocals, Electric Guitar, Electric Bass, Upright Bass and Farfisa).
