A Little Bit Country

A legend of country music produced by The White Stripes’ own Jack White. Could be the recipe for something wonderful...
Van Lear Rose by Loretta Lynn
Interscope records have released Van Lear Rose, the latest long-player from the massively prolific Grammy award-winning country music icon Loretta Lynn.
With 70 albums, 55 top 10 singles and 27 number one singles to her credit, Loretta Lynn is arguably the most iconic and inspirational women to come out of the country music scene.
She has influenced modern artists of all genres. Most recently, Jack White of Detroit duo The White Stripes, who has produced the 13 track album, describing his idol as the “greatest female singer/songwriter of the 20th century”.
Moody
Van Lear Rose, with its moody arrangements, loud and rocking guitars and intimate song writing also features the stunning Lynn-White duet Portland, Oregon. “The songs are country but a little bit different.” Loretta says of the new long-player.
Born in Kentucky and raised in a small shack during the height of the US Depression, Loretta was married at the age of 13, had four children by the age of 18 and became a grandmother at the age of 29. Instead of singing about how much she loved her man Loretta sang about being a Coal Miner’s Daughter and when Tammy Wynette hit the top with Stand By Your Man Loretta responded with The Pill which was banned by US radio. She soon became the first woman in country music to become a millionaire and in 1973, she made the cover of Newsweek.
Loretta has never been confined simply to country music. Her autobiography, Coal Miner’s Daughter became a number one best seller. In 1980, Universal Pictures released the screen adaptation and the film was nominated for seven Academy Awards. Actress Sissy Spacek won an Oscar for her movie portrayal of Loretta and the film itself is considered to be one of the best music biopics ever made.
Irreverence
“White’s playful irreverence for traditional country works well, with feral guitars giving a garage-blues echo to the acoustic fiddle and banjo. Lyn…is an outstanding presence – mean, hard, sexy and outshining White on the duet.” – Claire Allfree (Metro).
Of the many straight country albums put out by Loretta over the years, a selection include: Loretta Lynn – Sings, You Ain`t Woman Enough, Your Squaw Is On The Warpath, Back To The Country, Hymns, Out Of My Head and Back In My Bed, Lyin`, Cheatin`, Woman Chasin`...and Just A Woman, or Lead Me On, Louisiana Woman and Country Partners (all with Conway Twitty)
Van Lear Rose looks set to be Loretta’s breakthrough record in the UK and is certain to propel her music and her rags-to-riches story to a whole new audience.
Van Lear Rose is out now, on CD only, from Interscope Records.
