“A must-see documentary.” - Nuts
Our host on this journey is 30-year-old Sam Dunn, a lifelong Metal fan who also happens to be a genuine Anthropology scholar. After years of studying various global cultures Sam decided turn his academic eye to the culture of Metal.
His mission: to explore the musical roots of Metal from classical to jazz to blues, delve into the psyche of those who make it and those who love it, understand why it is demonised and marginalised and the never-ending controversy that surrounds it. On the way Sam answers some of the most enduring Heavy Metal puzzles: who invented the famed devil horns, what is the Devil’s note and why is it called Heavy Metal?
“Superbly crafted examination of heavy metal culture.” - Zoo
Twisted Sister
Utilising both his scholarly technique and fan’s enthusiasm, Sam travels the world interviewing and meeting some of the biggest and most notorious names in Metal, exploring the numerous genres and sub-genres.
At the Hammersmith Apollo Sam interviews Bruce Dickinson, in L.A he meets Dee Snider from Twisted Sister, travelling to Norway Sam meets Blasphemer and Necrobutcher from Black Metal group Mayhem and in Germany he’s joined by 30,000 other heavy metal fans at the Wacken festival, widely regarded as the 'Woodstock' of serious Metallers.
“ ...engrossing, horrifying and – yes – funny.” - Total Film
Complementing the musician interviews Sam meets some of his fellow academics and industry insiders to further explain the Metal phenomenon; sociologist Deena Weinstein author of Heavy Metal: The Music and Its Culture; Gavin Baddeley Satanist and author of Lucifer Rising: Sin, Devil Worship and Rock & Roll; Pamela Des Barres world famous 'super groupie' and Joey Severance, long-time metal tour manager. These are just a few of the places and people brought together in the most comprehensive and entertaining documentary on the phenomenon we know collectively as Heavy Metal.
