Third Time Plucky

Last updated: 15/10/2007 - 15:56

DreamWorks' hugely successful Shrek characters are back in another fairytale type adventure – once again voiced by Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas, on DVD.

When loveable ogre Shrek (Mike Myers - Waynes' World, The Cat In The Hat, the Austin Powers series, So I Married An Axe Murderer) married his very green Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) at the end of Summer 2004’s blockbuster sequel Shrek 2, becoming the next King and Queen of the magical animated faraway land of ‘Far Far Away’ wasn’t part of his plan. So when his new father-in-law, King Harold - the current incumbent (John Cleese - Fawlty Towers, Monty Python's Flying Circus, the later James Bond films, etc...) falls ill, it is up to Shrek to find a suitable heir, or he may be forced to give up his beloved swamp for the throne.

This being a fantasy/comedy adventure Shrek and pals set out on the inevitable quest with much pluck. Once more recruiting his sassy travelling companion Donkey - from both the former Shrek films (Eddie Murphy) and the rakish would-be duellist Puss In Boots (Antonio Banderas - Desperado, Interview With The Vampire, The Mask Of Zorro and Once Upon A Time In Mexico), for a new quest, Shrek sets out to bring back the rightful heir to the throne – Fiona’s rebellious cousin Artie.

Meanwhile – back in Far Far Away the Princess Fiona busies herself by rallying a ‘magnificent seven’ style band of her royal girlfriends - Snow White (Amy Poehler), Cinderella (Amy Sedaris), Sleeping Beauty (Cheri Oteri), and Rapunzel (Maya Rudolph) to try to defeat a coup d'etat led by the jilted villainous Prince Charming (Rupert Everett) from Shrek 2.

New characters for this third outing include Merlin – voiced by another former Monty Python Eric Idle, Lancelot, pop star Justin Timberlake as ‘Artie’ and Captain Hook – voiced by Ian McShane.

Expect Donkey to be feisty and quick with the one-liners, much wisecracking in a post modern style from Shrek The Third and the sort of riffing on fairy tale preconceptions we’ve all come to expect from the wonderful Shrek universe.

Here's what some of the reviews had to say about Shrek The Third when it was released in cinemas:

"(The) writers...lay on the pop-culture gags fans of the series have come to expect, but their story is an odd one for a film aimed primarily at small fry. What child is interested in pre-parenthood anxiety or wants to consider the idea that his/her own dad had a nine-month panic attack at the thought of becoming a father?" - Maitland McDonagh, reviewing the film for US listings magzine TV Guide.

"...this is the best-looking Shrek film yet. The filmmakers have attained a level of photo-realism in the animation here that is truly remarkable, from the texture and motion of characters' skin and their range of expressions to natural elements such as water, fire and foliage. On this level, Shrek the Third stands far above the first two films. While Shrek the Third offered several good laughs (for both kids and adults), the overall endeavor has a 'been there, done that' vibe". - 'Stax', reviewing the film for IGN Movies.
