Buffy Summers is back in the hands of her creator as Josh Whedon pens 'Season 8' for Dark Horse.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer - The Long Way Home
We take a look at the first issues of an exciting new regular comic release from Dark Horse - a continuation of Buffy The Vampire Slayer beyond the end of the hit American television series.
Into every generation a slayer is born. One girl, in all the world, a ‘Chosen One’, born with the strength, skill and power to stand alone against the vampires and other creatures of the night. To stand alone that is, until now...
Last Time On Buffy The Vampire Slayer...
Across seven seasons of award-winning television creator and 'showrunner' Joss Whedon delivered prime-time smash hit television Buffy The Vampire Slayer to millions of ardent fans across the world, making global stars of its young cast. As many as 10 million viewers tuned in week after week in the US alone to follow the adventures of Buffy Summers - student by day, Vampire Slayer by night - and her schoolmates as they battled the undead and all manner of eldritch foes, all the while juggling the 'normal' problems of high school, college, relationships, family, sexuality, work - and the (often as not) imminent end of the world...
Now, the self-same author has brought his super-powered heroine and her rag-tag collection of associates back to Dark Horse in this direct follow-up to season seven of the smash-hit TV series. Not just a 'based on the television series' comic book, this is a proper continuation of the WB series penned - initially at least - by the creator himself.
Since the destruction of the Hellmouth, the newly legion Slayers have gotten themselves organised and are busy handing out some serious blows to the supernatural forces that have long been the Slayers’ enemies. But not everything's fun and firearms, as an old enemy reappears and Dawn experiences some serious growing pains...
It's Alive!
Something of a 'Renaissance Man' Emmy and Academy Award-nominated writer Joss Whedon’s ability to create a self-contained universe stocked with compelling characters, unexpected humour and imaginative stories has resulted in a myriad of projects during his career. In addition to creating and executive producing the entire run of the smash-hit television series Buffy The Vampire Slayer and companion show Angel (writing and directing multiple episodes of each) he has brought his trademark wit and compassion as a screen writer to a variety of feature films including Speed, Alien: Resurrection and Toy Story. In addition Josh Whedon is the man behind the first-class (and criminally cancelled) TV deep space ‘Western’ Firefly as well as its' big screen spin-off Serenity.
He also wrote a comic book series for Dark Horse based on the concept of a Vampire Slayer of the future – Fray – based on a character that continues the story of the ‘Slayers birthright in a dystopian future Earth populated by alien threats as well as the resurgent creatures of the night. Originally released as a six issue comic book Fray has now been collected by Dark Horse into a graphic novel edition that is well-worth tracking down.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Season 8 is in all good comic shops now as a monthly series - with the first batch of issues collected as a 136 volume under the title Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Long Way Home. A companion volume of the next few issues is also now out - which contuines the adventure - called Buffy Season Eight: No Future For You (Vol.2), also from Dark Horse.
Now the third-largest comic-book publisher in the U.S Dark Horse Comics has proven - since 1986 - to be a solid example of how integrity and innovation can help broaden a unique storytelling medium and establish a small, homegrown company as an industry giant.
In addition to publishing comics from top talent like Frank Miller (The Dark Knight Returns / The Dark Knight Strikes Back, Elektra Assassin, Sin City, 300, mid-80s Daredevil) Mike Mignola (Hellboy), Neil Gaiman (Neverwhere, Sandman), comics legend Will Eisner (The Spirit) as well as from lesser-known talent (Fluffy) Dark Horse is widely recognised as the world's leading publisher of licensed comics’ material. Their highly successful line-up of comics and products based on popular genre properties include: Star Wars, Aliens, Conan The Barbarian, Predator, The Thing, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Emily the Strange, Tim Burton, Trigun and The Incredibles.
