Weekend Project: Planting A Fruit Tree

Last updated: 19/10/2006 - 11:10

Got a bit of spare time this weekend? Have a go at our fun garden project.

Container Fruit Tree

Whether you have a tiny backyard, a patio or a huge garden, a fruit tree in a pretty pot is an ideal addition to your garden space. Small, decorative and bearer of delicious fruit, what could be better?

Tips

When buying your fruit tree, look for 'miniarette' varieties. These have been expertly bred to be smaller than normal fruit trees.

When to Grow

Most container fruit trees can be planted at any time of the year. Saying that, bare-rooted fruit trees should really be planted in winter.

What To Do

1. Make a hole big enough for the roots of your tree to spread.

2. Cover the bottom of the hole with compost and some plant food.

3. Pop your tree in and gradually sprinkle soil around the roots (be sure to get rid of any air pockets).

4. Water well.

5. Support with a stake if necessary.

Care

Growing a fruit tree takes a bit if work. They need pruning in winter, plus delicate trees like lemon and lime will need protecting from frost in winter.

Apart from that, planting a container fruit tree for your patio or garden is an easy weekend's work. Next, just sit back, relax and enjoy the fruits of your labour.
