What Is Tai Ch'i Chuan?

Put simply, Tai ch'i chuan - more often referred to as simply 'Tai Ch'i - is a low-impact way to de-stress and get fit. Developed in China over 1,000 years ago, this form of exercise unites the mind and the body, combining aspects of meditation, exercise, visualisation and martial art. The study focuses on relaxation, breathing and body alignment.

According to sports health professors Li and Chang, the term tai ch'i chuan (meaning tai ch'i boxing) first appeared in the I Ching - the 'Book of Change' - and represents the encompassing state of the universe before the creation of heaven and earth. For this reason, all tai ch'i movement is circular. Movements are continuous from one posture to the next, in a completely integrated circle.
