New Era For Christies
Last updated: 11/04/2007 - 09:49
Following an official stamp of excellence the Christie Hospital became an NHS Foundation Trust on 1 April and has revealed a 100 day plan as a new organisation.
Foundation trust status will give the Christie greater freedom to develop services for cancer patients, with the public also having a bigger say in decisions. For the first time ever a council of governors - made up of local people, representatives from partner organisations, staff and volunteers - will have a leading voice in the future of the Christie.
In its first 100 days as a new style hospital the Christie will start a wide range of projects. These will include detailed interviews with 100 patients to help further improve services, job swaps for the board directors to understand parts of the organisation better, expanding the patient trials unit and rolling-out plans to provide the Christie chemotherapy and radiotherapy services at other hospitals in the region.
Proud History
Caroline Shaw, chief executive of Christie Hospital said: “We are proud of our 100 year history and our excellent reputation and want to keep building on this. Achieving foundation trust status is a great vote of confidence in our ability and our vision for the future. It provides an exciting opportunity to further improve services for our cancer patients and our 100 day plan shows we are raring to go.
“We are going through a great period of change but our values will always remain the same, to provide the highest quality care and treatment to our patients.“
As a Foundation Trust the Christie will remain firmly part of the NHS with NHS care continuing to be free. The hospital will still have to meet national quality standards and be inspected in the same way as other hospitals - but will have greater freedom from central government control.
The Christie Hospital is one of the leading cancer centres in Europe - registering around 11,000 new patients and treating about 40,000 patients every year. It also runs one of the largest clinical trials units in the country for phase I/II trials and is a partner in the Manchester Cancer Research Centre with The University of Manchester, Paterson Institute for Cancer Research and Cancer Research UK.
Involved in fund raising activities all year round the hospital is involved in the Manchester Versus Cancer concert and has its own dedictaed fund raising/donations website: The Appeal of the Christie Hospital - Manchester.
