Women Renovate More Than Men

Women are more likely to spend their bank holidays renovating around the house than are men, according to a new survey.
Propertyfinder.com’s research reveals that three out of every four women throughout the UK are willing to renovate their own home and are prepared to don the overalls and get their hands dirty, which compares to only 60% of men.
The survey also identified the May Bank Holiday weekend specifically as being the most popular time for Brits to renovate, with respondents quoting both the increasingly warmer weather and the proximity to other long weekends as reasons for them wanting to pick the traditional workers' holiday to get stuck in to household jobs.
Most Common
The most common renovations uncovered in the findings include: re-plumbing, replacing the central heating, installing double-glazing and carrying out re-wiring.
With Britain facing an increasing shortage of properties for sale, it is no surprise that 30% of respondents said that they would 'definitely' make an offer on a property requiring renovation, with 41% of those surveyed stating that they would be 'willing to consider' buying a property requiring renovation. This is despite the fact that more than 62% of those asked have never done any renovations before. With house prices close to city centres often too expensive for young buyers, some young couples are choosing to buy homes requiring a great deal of improvement just to be able to live relatively close to work.
Homebuyers are now willing to spend a significant amount of money on renovations, with the average amount people stated they would be willing to spend coming in at £18,500.
Warren Bright, Chief Executive Officer of Propertyfinder.com - who carried out the research - said, “As good properties are in increasingly short supply, it is no surprise to see more and more home buyers taking on the challenges of renovation, with the age group most willing to take up the challenge between 25 and 40. In addition, an increase in property makeover shows has developed consumers’ appetites for home renovation.”
