Safe & Secure Windows

Whether you have moved into a new home or have been living in the same place for some time, it is worth considering: are your windows as safe, or as secure, as they could be?

When reviewing window safety, consider selecting windows that can be locked with a key in the partly open, or 'vent' position. This ensures a higher level of safety and security against intruders. This type of window can stop a person forcing the window open or leaning through a smaller window to undo the catch on a larger one.

Window locks should be fitted by an experienced locksmith. But most types can be fitted securely in place by anybody willing to use a screwdriver. A range of self-locking window locks are available in DIY stores, these can be a little more expensive than other types but can be more convenient to use on windows that are frequently opened and closed.

Bolt

It is too easy for a single clasp or handle to be left inadvertently half closed. Many windows have bolts that come out of the opening frame into the fixed frame. These are operated by turning the handle. You should ensure that glass cannot be removed from windows without being broken, as many types of single glazing can easily be popped out from there surrounds.

Wooden Frames

Wooden frames in french windows should have mortise bolts fitted at the top and bottom of each opening door. They should be carefully fitted into the frame and not the other door. If the wood is not thick enough to allow mortise bolts to be fitted, you might consider bolts. You should always remove keys from window locks to prevent anyone breaking a pane of glass and entering by turning the key.

DIY shops have inexpensive key-operated locks to fit all kinds of windows. Ideally you should have a key to unlock each window, however care needs to be taken to make sure that those keys are kept to hand. Should they be mislaid, you could be closing off potential escape routes in the event of a fire or other emergency. By having a number of locks that use the same key throughout your home you can keep a single key with you and avoid that worry.

Security Tips

If you are re-glazing, consider laminated glass. This will be harder to break and is far more attractive than metal grilles.

An especially vulnerable type of window is the louvre window. Popular for ventilating smaller rooms, downstairs lavatories and kitchens, these arrangements of horizontal glass slats can be removed from their frame all too easily unless the slats are fixed permanently in place with an easily-available epoxy resin. Special louvre locks are also available to stop this type of window from being opened beyond a certain limit. However, replacing them with fixed glass may be the only option to really give peace of mind.

Casement locks make it impossible to open windows without the correct key. Specialist advice should be taken on fitting locks to patio doors, which should have locks fitted at the top and bottom. Glass panes can be broken or knocked out by anyone determined to reach in and unlock the door.

Safety

Sliding glass doors are also vulnerable to break-ins, as well as representing a safety hazard. Many accidents are caused by the reflex to push against a glass door as if it is solid and unbreakable. This has caused many a visit to the emergency room, with the glass suddenly breaking under the hand, sometimes causing grave injuries.

Get into the habit of checking that windows are secured before leaving your home. Shared houses in particular need extra care. It is all too easy for a group to each assume that other members of the household have secured window locks before leaving, for work or shopping. At the end of the day it is important to remember that no lock - however sturdy - is any use unless it is actually locked!
