The long story of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy started with the first of the 'phases' in this collection - the March 1978 BBC Radio 4 serial. It has since been transformed into a world beating brand. To date, the tale has also been a stage play, an LP, a novel (with four sequels, no less), a set of unabridged talking books, read by Douglas Adams himself, a lavishly illustrated ‘coffee table’ volume and much assorted merchandising ephemera. The original 'phase' and was adapted for BBC television in the 1980s (available on DVD now - with a first-class Kevin Davies documetary on the making of the show) and made it onto the big screen - directed by Garth Jennings - earlier this year.

Anyone interested in further reading on the life and work of the late Douglas Adams – including his non-Hitch Hiker’ works: Last Chance To See (Ballantine Books), the ‘Dirk Gently novels and his work as script editor on BBC TVs Doctor Who – could do worse that check out Wish You Were Here: The Official Biography Of Douglas Adams by Nick Webb (Headline), Don't Panic: Douglas Adams And The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy by Neil Gaiman and MJ Simpson (Titan) and the posthumously published collection The Salmon of Doubt and Other Writings (Pan Macmillan) all of which are first rate.
