Call For Higher Standards

Lack of awareness - rather than speed - is the major killer on Britain's roads, claims drivers' pressure group.

A motor safety campaign says only 200 of the annual 3,400 deaths on British roads are a result of speeding.

The Association of British Drivers (ABD) wants the Government to concentrate its road safety efforts on drivers' lack of concentration, poor observation and lack of hazard awareness skills.

The association claims forcing drivers to stick to often unrealistic speed limits has been a failure in reducing road deaths and injuries.

The ABD is arguing in favour of better education of all road users and engineering to iron out accident blackspots.

Enforcement targeted at the reckless few would also reduce deaths and injuries on the roads, its 'See It Miss It' campaign says.
