Woe On The Cards?

Watch your cards - unlucky Britons lose around £100 million each year.

Figures reveal that unlucky Britons will lose around £100 million abroad this year, through fraudulent use of their lost or stolen credit and debit cards. The problem affects enough people from the UK to fill 400 typical holiday charter planes.

Key findings include:

Unprotected Travel

15% of travellers never take out any form of travel insurance, yet with 23% of travellers experiencing a major problem whilst abroad, it seems the discrepancy of those not covered will be an expensive oversight on their part.

In The Know

70% of travellers do not bother to research their destination before they set off, and rely on word of mouth for information.

Regional Divide

Despite 75% of us not being insured for credit card loss and theft, when asked what they would least like to lose, one in two people, (54%) said credit card theft was their biggest holiday nightmare.

Regionally, southerners are far more hung up on losing their credit cards (56%) in comparison to northerners (46%) who rate their passport far more highly.

Sick As A Parrot

More than one in four Britons fear losing their medication (27%). Women are especially concerned by losing their pills (33%), compared to men (20%).

Girls On Film

Almost one in five people (18%) would most hate losing their camera on holiday. This was a special concern for over 65's (26%).

Mobile Madness

With mobile phone mania still rife, one in ten people (11%) feared losing their mobile phone abroad.

CPP, the credit and payment car protection company, which produced the findings, constantly reminds its customers to take action, to prevent the loss and theft of their cards.

Such actions include:

  • Never leave your plastic cards unattended in a car or by the pool

  • Do not carry plastic cards on the top of a handbag or loose in a pocket where they can be stolen easily

  • Never leave handbags under chairs or on windowsills in crowded places

  • Never keep your chequebook and card together

  • Never lose sight of your card in a shop or restaurant. Check sales vouchers before you sign them and ensure that the card is returned promptly
