Ford Puma 1.6

"If ride quality and handling were the only criteria by which a car was judged then the Puma would be nigh on perfect" says Lifestyle's test driver; Philippa Davis.

"It’s a joy to throw around, as the firm suspension and wonderful chassis work to keep the whole package firmly on the road and the positive gear change and free reving engine combine to produce a sporting feel, even though the stats prove it’s not an out -and -out racer. Brakes are well up to the standard I had begun to expect."

Equipment & Interior

"Good seating, plenty of space for the driver, and a well laid out, nicely finished dash all add to the overall feeling that the Puma has had a lot of care and attention lavished on it by Ford. Even the noises the car makes are entirely what you would expect from looking at the rakish lines, the engine producing a very pleasing, muted roar and wind noise all but eliminated. Watch your head getting in, I must have cracked my head half a dozen times before I got used to it!

"As stated previously, dash layout and finish are good, without being exceptional and generally, trim levels look and feel as if they will stand the test of time. Traction control is standard and likewise alloy wheels, power steering, electric front windows and a good quality stereo radio/cassette.

"Because it’s a coupe, and a small one at that, space in the rear is severely limited. It’s children only, on anything other than the shortest journey and luggage capacity is low with an awkward, high lip at the back making loading difficult.

Value For Money

"Holding its value well, the Puma bucks the trend for some Fords in the depreciation stakes. Make sure you can live with its limitations of space and load and it will represent very good VFM if you get the maximum discount from your dealer."
