Daimler Chrysler Grand Voyager

"First things first - the Grand Voyager is big! It can carry seven passengers in great comfort (but with minimal luggage) or by taking out five of the seats, the driver and passenger have a massive 4,100 litres of luggage/cargo capacity, behind them.

"I tried this two-seater option, and was impressed by the aircraft hanger-like space we had to play with. Power is provided by a 3.3 litre V6 petrol engine, which, when coupled to the four-speed auto gearbox, in the limited edition version we tested, ensured adequate grunt at most speeds, although, when carrying a full load, it sometimes struggled on long hills.

"Despite its size, the Voyager handles remarkably well, so much so it's easy to forget, until you come to park in the narrow spaces at most shopping centres. This is when the centrally-positioned sliding doors, for passengers, are a real boon if you have children, particularly on our test vehicle, where they were electronic, as was the tail-gate.

Equipment & Interior

"The list of 'toys' is extensive, including, a cruise control with more options than I have ever seen before; a superb sound system; heated front seats; air conditioning, and a heating system that allows precise control of temperatures front and rear, plenty of buttons and knobs to play with, and that in itself leads to our first moan.

"There are just too many buttons and lights on the dash board to allow for easy navigation, particularly at night. Conversely, the steering wheel mounted buttons, for the cruise control, proved particularly difficult to use at night, because they were unlit, and impossible to find.

"Anybody looking for an upmarket, well equipped people/ cargo mover will be well advised to give the Grand Voyager a closer look, but should also bear in mind the £30,000+ price tag, and the 17.8mpg my test model returned."

In A Nutshell

"Comfortable, even luxurious, ideal for taking groups/parties mid- to long-distances, or, for the larger, more affluent family. If you fit the profile, this is the one for you."
