Jamaica

With 4,500 square miles of island paradise and a predominantly African background, Jamaica is one of the most enticing of the Caribbean islands. Sweeping sands, crashing seas and a relaxed way of life all combine to make this an ever more popular holiday destination.

Kingston

Although its appearance is less than appealing and there are certain areas that outsiders should avoid, Kingston (the capital) is nonetheless Jamaica’s cultural and commercial heart.

With its natural harbour, historic downtown area, monstrous hotels and offices and all manner of street life, the city is very much alive. New Kingston is home to the Bob Marley Museum and is the most visited attraction that the city has to offer.

The waterfront area of downtown Kingston has a revamp planned soon, but still has the varied craft markets to offer as well as cuisine options including Indian, Chinese and American-style restaurants. If you can, visit the jerk stalls and taste this spicy treat whilst soaking up the reggae music in the background.

The Negril Area

If you travel to the Negril area, and further north to the marine park or Great Morass swampland and the nearby mangrove forests, you will be in the Negril Watershed Environmental Protection Area, the first protected area in Jamaica. This is well worth a visit as it will invigorate all your senses.

Jamaica has so much to offer both culturally and historically, and the diverse blend found here is such that it will enchant the most travel-weary tourist.

London to Kingston or Montego Bay is 10 hours. Average summer temperature: 30°C. The rainy months are May and October.
