After its initial broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on 8 March 1981, this magical full cast dramatisation became an instant classic and has become one of the best-selling BBC audio titles of all time. Superbly dramatised by Brian Sibley and moving through countless changes of scenery and characters, the listener is taken on a thrilling adventure through an enchanting world.
Brian Sibley's famous adaptation, starring Ian Holm (The Fifth Element, Alien, Peter Jackson's The Lord of The Rings trilogy) and Michael Hordern, has been divided into three corresponding parts, with newly recorded beginning and end narration by Ian Holm - who plays Frodo here, as he does in the Peter Jackson feature film trilogy - also as Bilbo Baggins.
The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and Return of the King and The Hobbit are also released with stunning new children’s covers(£16.99 cassette, £24.99 CD). The dramatisations have captured the imagination of children and young adults, and these editions have been designed with the younger listener in mind.
Individually The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring runs to 4 hours and 35 minutes, The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers runs to 4 hours and 29 minutes and the final part: The Lord Of The Rings: The Return of the King runs to 3 hours and 10 minutes.
