Former Boomtown Rat frontman Bob Geldof has come top in a poll to find the celebrities the British public think have used their fame most to benefit others.

According to research from The National Lottery, Bob Geldof was favourite amongst the public – with one in five votes - for using his high profile to benefit others.

Nelson Mandela (pictured, right) is a runner-up in third place, after 'Sir' Bob and Princess Diana in the top ten.

Second in the poll is the late Diana, Princess of Wales, whose commitment to charity work and compassionate approach to those in need has inspired millions, with third being South African political activist Nelson Mandela, recognised for his long anti-apartheid campaigning work.

Jenni Falconer, National Lottery Awards Ambassador said: “The results of this poll prove that the British public recognise and admire people who dedicate their lives to helping others."
